Bioethics and Library Resources
Presented by

Martina Darragh, MLS
Kennedy Institute of Ethics

Georgetown University

Imagine that you have been appointed as a nonscientist to a local Institutional Review Board (IRB). What would you do to prepare for your new role? This class provides a history of bioethics information in NLM databases; tips on the utilization of current resources such as PubMed’s bioethics subset and NIH web sites; and reviews of international bioethics databases such as UNESCO’s Global Ethics Observatory (GEObs) and the Bioethics Literature Database (BELIT), a cooperative database of 5 ethics centers in Germany, France, and the United States. Participants will devise search strategies for bioethics literature on such topics as health literacy, “big data,” emergency preparedness, and health status disparities, and develop a consent form for a clinical research project. At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to access bioethics information on a wide variety of topics quickly and easily

The Evolving Librarian
Presented by

Michelle Kraft, MLS

Cleveland Clinic Alumni Library

Once thought of as the keepers of knowledge, librarian’s roles are changing and they must either evolve and adapt or become a casualty of attrition. Disruptive technology, society and changes made by the Affordable Healthcare Act not only impact patients, doctors, and hospitals but the librarians who serve them. Librarians are faced more than ever with a shrinking budget and pressure to show their impact. Administration is demanding more than books and journals from its librarians and scrutinizing everything with an eye on its return on investment. This class will look at these changes and provide examples of how librarians can meet them head on.

In the event of inclement weather, please call (609) 275-4140 to determine if the conference or meeting is cancelled or delayed.

Registration cancellations prior to 3/12/15 will receive a full refund less a $25 administration fee.  Cancellations after 3/12/15 cannot be refunded.

NJHA is a tobacco-free campus.  No use of tobacco products will be allowed within the facilities or on NJHA's property at any time.

This project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. HHS-N-276-2011-00003-C with the University of Pittsburgh, Health Sciences Library System.
